President Trump’s unpredictable behavior is cooling business investment

Published: 4 November 2025

When the province of Ontario ran an anti-tariff advertisement that featured voice-over from a 1987 speech by US President Ronald Reagan, it hit a little too close to home for current President Donald Trump. Trump threatened additional tariffs on Canada and demanded the ad campaign end. “If this was a sitcom, we’d be laughing, but it’s not,” says Preetika Joshi, Assistant Professor of Accounting at Desautels. The US President’s erratic and impulsive behaviour is having a real effect on business investment. “This is creating speculation and so much uncertainty,” Joshi told CTV News. “And one thing we know that happens when there is uncertainty is businesses delay big investments.”
