Reframing Entrepreneurship: Desautels hosts inaugural Conference on Everyday Entrepreneurship

Published: 29 October 2025

The inaugural 2025 Conference on Everyday Entrepreneurship (MCEE), hosted by the Desautels Faculty of Management, brought together scholars, practitioners, and community leaders to explore entrepreneurship beyond traditional boundaries. Organized by the Entrepreneurship & Innovation Initiative in collaboration with the Sustainable Growth Initiative and EDI, the two-day event spotlighted ventures and founders often overlooked in mainstream research. Keynote speaker Lisa Cohen introduced the concept of “everyday entrepreneurs,” emphasizing how entrepreneurial challenges are embedded in the daily lives of individuals who may not be formally recognized as entrepreneurs.

The conference featured diverse voices, including Wharton professor Damon J. Phillips, who critiqued the elite focus of current entrepreneurship research, and jazz musician Marika Galea, who shared her creative journey through the lens of entrepreneurial resilience. Discussions spanned topics such as gender inequality, labor markets, and entrepreneurial ecosystems, reinforcing the idea that entrepreneurship is not confined to Silicon Valley—it thrives in communities, creative industries, and everyday experiences. MCEE marked a pivotal step in broadening how entrepreneurship is studied, understood, and supported.
