Music for Pain (virtual)

Tuesday, November 11, 2025 12:00to13:00
680 Sherbrooke W, QC, CA

Offered by the Health and Well-Being Program

For centuries, music has been recognized for its remarkable ability to ease pain. However, the mechanisms behind this effect are only beginning to be understood. In this presentation, Dr. Mathieu Roy will explore how music’s impact on pain is closely tied to its power to elicit strong emotional responses and thereby alter the way that the brain interpret painful experiences. Drawing on findings from behavioral studies and brain imaging research, Dr. Roy will show how listening to music engages networks involved in emotion, reward, and attention — and how these same circuits can modulate pain signals in the brain. By examining how emotional and motivational processes interact with pain perception, this talk will provide insight into why music can serve as a potent, non-pharmacological tool for pain relief.
