Dear students,

The last six weeks have been challenging for all of us. Thank you, once again, for your patience and resilience as we work our way through this unprecedented situation.

Quebec’s National Assembly adopted Bill 2 on Saturday morning. It addresses, in a renewed form, several matters once included in Bill 106, and includes measures to end the teaching boycott pressure tactics. The law is now in effect.

As a result, we will be restarting, as quickly as possible, learning activities that had been suspended. Medical students in years 1 and 2 received the plan for next week in an email on Friday, and an update was sent to Med-3 and Med-4 students this afternoon.

Legal counsel at the four universities have analyzed the law, which creates specific obligations for universities to ensure that educational activities take place. For more information, please consult their summary.

Of course, we all would have preferred to see teaching resume in the framework of a negotiated settlement between the government and the federations.

While I know that you are eager to get back to your training so that you can progress on your career path, I also recognize that emotions are running high for many students and clinical faculty alike. Please remember that your supervisors value you, both as learners and as their future colleagues.

Finally, I want to give a giant shout-out to Associate Dean Mélanie Mondou, the UGME team, student leadership and the many academic and administrative staff in FMHS at both the Montreal and Outaouais campuses, and at the university, who pulled together to keep our educational mission going and to be there for you.

We will all continue to support you as we navigate the resumption of all education activities, including the clinical learning experiences that are so important to your preparation as future physicians.
